Heartdue

Log spending from your Android

Pay the way you normally do, and the amount and the place appear in Heartdue a moment later: counted against your budget, sorted into a category, and linked to a bill if that's what it was. No bank login, and nothing to type.

Before you start

  1. On your phone, open Heartdue and go to Spending → Phones → Add a phone. Choose Android and tap Create key. (Needs the Essentials plan.)
  2. Keep that screen open. It shows your key with a copy button, and these same steps.
  3. The key is shown once. If you lose it, remove the phone and add it again; it takes seconds.

Make sure your bank tells you when you pay — a notification from its app, a text message or an email. If it doesn't, switch payment alerts on in the bank's app first; that alert is what Heartdue reads.

Set up the Heartdue app

The free Heartdue app reads the payment alerts your bank already sends — from its app, by text or by email — and logs them for you. Nothing else to install, and it takes about three minutes.

  1. On your Android phone, download the Heartdue app and open the file. If your phone asks, allow Install unknown apps for your browser, then tap Install. (It isn't on Google Play yet. If Play Protect warns you, tap More details → Install anyway.)
  2. Open Heartdue, tap Paste key, then Connect. It says Connected ✓.
  3. Tap Turn on and switch Heartdue on in the list. Switch greyed out? Go back to Heartdue, tap App settings, then ⋮ in the top corner → Allow restricted settings, and try again.
  4. Under Apps Heartdue reads, check your bank is there. Banks and payment apps are found by themselves; tap Add an app for any that's missing. What your bank sends by text, by email or in a chat app is read too.
  5. On a Samsung, Xiaomi or Huawei phone, also tap App settings → Battery → Unrestricted, so the phone doesn't put Heartdue to sleep.

Check it works: tap Send a test. Heartdue replies “Connected!” and logs nothing. Your next card payment appears under Recent in the app, and on your Spending page, a moment later.

What it logs

  • Card payments, tapping your phone to pay, and online purchases, whenever your bank or wallet tells you — by app notification, by text or by email.
  • Refunds, in English or Arabic, when the bank's message says so.

Anything your bank doesn't tell you about won't appear, and neither will cash. Add those on the Spending page. Messages that aren't payments are ignored.

What gets sent, and what Heartdue keeps

  • Only payment alerts. Heartdue reads notifications from banks, cards and payment apps, and what a bank sends you by text, by email or in a chat app, and only sends ones with an amount of money in them. Never what people write to you, in a chat, a text or an email; never group chats; never one-time codes.
  • It sends that alert's title and text. Heartdue picks out the amount and the shop and throws the rest away without storing it, including any balance or card digits.
  • Heartdue keeps the amount, shop, date and a category. Never a card number, and never a balance.
  • Your key is stored only as a scrambled fingerprint. It can add spending to one profile and nothing else; it can't read your bills, budget or balances, unless you choose to let this phone see “left this period”.
  • Who sees it: you, and anyone in your Trusted Circle you've given Full view.
  • Treat the key like a password. Don't share it or send it in a message. If you think it got out, remove the phone in Heartdue and it stops working immediately.

Troubleshooting

The Heartdue app's Recent list shows each payment it sent and what Heartdue replied.

Android hid this message from HeartdueAndroid 15 hides messages it thinks contain a code, and “card ending 1234” looks like one. Turn off Settings → Notifications → Enhanced notifications.
  • Nothing happens after paying: open the Heartdue app and check step 2 says Turned on ✓, and that your bank is under Apps Heartdue reads (or that it texts you).
  • Works for a while, then stops: Android may be putting Heartdue to sleep. Go to Settings → Apps → Heartdue → Battery and choose Unrestricted.
  • “Android hid this message” in Recent: Android 15 hides texts it thinks hold a code. Turn off Settings → Notifications → Enhanced notifications.
  • A shopping or delivery app is being read: remove it under Apps Heartdue reads, so an order and the card payment for it aren't both counted.
  • Your bank's app, its text, its email and its chat message all announce a purchase: that's fine. Heartdue counts it once.
  • Wrong amount: some banks mention your balance before the payment. Heartdue skips numbers labelled as a balance or limit, but if one slips through, fix or delete the entry on the Spending page.
  • “Card payment” instead of the shop's name: your bank doesn't name the merchant in its notification, so Heartdue can't either. If the name matters, delete the entry on the Spending page and add it by hand.
  • Wrong category: change it on the Spending page. Heartdue remembers and files that merchant the same way next time.
  • A payment shows up crossed out: it matched a bill already on your list, so it's counted there instead. Tap Not this bill if that's wrong.

Turning it off

  1. In Heartdue, open Spending → Phones and tap Remove phone. The key stops working at once; spending already logged stays.
  2. On your phone, uninstall the Heartdue app, or switch off its notification access in Settings.
